After working in the event industry for over 20 years, primarily as a photographer, I’ve held a unique perspective at hundreds of conferences dealing with both the front and back of the house.
By assessing the needs of every department in an association, I learned how to best accomplish their marketing goals and how to help them succeed all year long with the images I produced.
By being in a front-forward position at every session and reception, and interacting with attendees and sponsors, I gained a great deal of insight into what they hoped to achieve from their presence. Working regional and national events for a decade or more, I also developed personal relationships with attendees and got to know their event experiences and what felt unfulfilled from the conference.
And what I’ve learned…
Attendees want to purchase from companies who take a personal interest in their needs and are they even more persuaded by those who give back to the community in a heartfelt way.
Sponsors struggle to make an emotional connection with attendees and are eager to discover new ways to create deeper future professional relationships.
From my own experience of being on-site for long hours, needing to address
emergencies, and maintaining comfort at a conference, I created The Conference Care Package. This customized care package addressed the needs of the attendee and sponsor and provided CSR (corporate social responsibility) opportunities to help those in need.
But the world has changed—to say the least—and I have adapted my care
packages for the virtual and onsite audiences. I choose to look at the recent state of the industry as a challenge and an opportunity to put aside what we have always done in favor of looking into new ways to put the “social” into social distancing.
